Skazka Canyon: Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide

We visited Skazka Canyon (also known as Fairytale Canyon) – and for me, it was honestly one of the most fascinating natural places I’ve ever seen. That’s why we’d love to share all the essential information about this amazing trip, so that you can enjoy it too.
So if you’re planning your Kyrgyzstan itinerary and still have some space for a beautiful and relatively easy day trip to the southwest side of Issyk-Kul Lake, stick with us – this place is really worth it!
The Myth behind Skazka Canyon
Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon is a stunning canyon located on the southwest shore of Issyk-Kul Lake. What makes this place truly special is its colorful, sandy rock formations that shape a surreal landscape surrounded by legends.
According to one popular local legend, a dragon once fell in love with a princess who lived in the nearby Skazka village. But sadly, the princess didn’t return his love. Heartbroken and furious, the dragon cast a curse on the valley:
“With every full moon, the water in the well will rise and flood everything.”
To stop the curse, the villagers began covering the well with stones during each full moon – and it worked. That is, until one night the princess forgot.
The water burst out, flooding the entire valley and creating what we now know as Issyk-Kul Lake. When the dragon realized what had happened, he was devastated. In his sorrow, he turned to stone – and his petrified body is said to be the strange rock formations and hills you now see in Skazka Canyon.
Is Skazka Canyon Worth It?
When you’re standing in the vibrant Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon, you can simply sit down somewhere on a hill, close your eyes for a moment, and really feel the magic of the place.
The canyon itself is truly impressive, and just like Jeti Oguz or other natural gems in Kyrgyzstan, it’s one of those stops that will stay with you. What makes Skazka different is that it’s not about high mountains, but rather about color, shapes, and imagination. It’s like stepping into a surreal painting made of sand.
It’s also one of the most easily accessible and budget-friendly trips you can take around Issyk-Kul. If you’re looking for something unique, relaxing, and different from alpine hikes, Skazka is definitely worth it.
When to Visit Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon?
We were in Kyrgyzstan in the second half of August, and honestly, the weather was perfect. We only had one rainy day – and that was right after our 3-day Ala Kul trek, so we were already tired and didn’t mind taking it easy for a bit.
If I can recommend a time, the main travel season in Kyrgyzstan is from July to August, and I’d definitely suggest sticking to this period if you want warm and stable weather. That said, visiting Skazka Canyon outside of summer is also possible – but keep in mind that rain can make the sandy terrain tricky. Imagine flooded paths and soft, unstable peaks – not ideal for hiking.
Skazka Canyon makes for a perfect half-day trip, and it fits into almost any Kyrgyzstan itinerary, whether you’re doing a full Issyk-Kul loop or just passing through. In our case, we went from Barskoon to Skazka, and from there we hitchhiked to Kochkor – it was the perfect stop on the way, and we were really happy with that decision.
How to get to Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon?
We got to Skazka Canyon from our previous guesthouse in Barskoon (coming from the direction of Karakol). People at the guesthouse helped us find the local bus stop, and we took a marshrutka that took around 30 minutes and cost 100 KGS / $1.20 USD per person.
If you want to go to Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon from other places, it is definitely possible from Karakol (because Skazka is in the direction where marshrutkas go) and we also met a couple of people who went from Karakol. I think that it should go from Bazaar Bus Station but please check the information:
()The same situation is with Bishkek and other towns or villages on the way. In case Kyrgyzstan is “country of the one road”, it is easier to move there. I would personally recommend always finding a bus station and asking people for marshrutkas and they help you.
If you’d rather skip the hassle, you can always book a taxi, but we preferred traveling by marshrutkas or hitchhiking when needed. Speaking of hitchhiking – it’s a pretty common thing in Kyrgyzstan. You’ll often see locals and tourists doing it, and sometimes drivers might ask for a small payment (usually similar to a marshrutka fare). Once we got off the marshrutka, we were already standing right by the Skazka Canyon sign – it’s clearly marked both on the road and on online maps, so it’s easy to find. From there, you just turn left and follow a dirt road straight to the entrance of the canyon. It’s about a 500-meter walk, and once we reached the gate, we paid 50 KGS / $0.60 USD as an entry fee.
How to Get to Skazka Canyon by Tour
If you’re not in the mood to figure out marshrutkas, hitchhiking, or just want to skip the whole logistics puzzle, guided tours are a great way to explore Skazka Canyon without the stress. You’ll get picked up, taken straight to the highlights, and usually learn more thanks to a local guide.

Horseback Riding, Trekking & Off-Road Tour
This 6-hour private tour is for adventure lovers. You’ll visit Skazka Canyon, ride a horse through wild landscapes, go trekking, and enjoy some fun off-road moments in the Tien Shan region. It includes everything – a guide, transport, entry fees, and even meals. Great if you want a little bit of everything packed into one day.
2 Days Issyk Kul Lake Canyons Horse Riding and Yurt Stay
If you want a real taste of Kyrgyzstan’s landscapes and nomadic culture, this 2-day adventure might be just what you’re looking for. The tour includes a visit to Skazka Canyon, a scenic drive around Issyk-Kul Lake, horseback riding, and a night in a traditional yurt camp.
It’s a great combination of soft adventure and local experience. You’ll be picked up in Bishkek, everything is organized (meals, transport, entrance fees), and you’ll even get to enjoy some peaceful moments by the lake. Ideal if you want something deeper than a day trip, but still manageable time-wise.
What to Do in Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon?
After we passed the entrance, we started walking through the canyon, going up and down the sandy hills – and for a while, we didn’t see a single person around us. There’s a main dirt path that leads from the entrance sign to the main viewpoint, which is about 2 kilometers long, but we decided to go off the main route and explore more.
The views from the hills were absolutely stunning, and we enjoyed those quiet moments so much – as you can probably tell from the photos below. We were also lucky that the weather was on our side this time. Unlike the day before, it didn’t rain at all.
Once we arrived at the main tourist spot, we saw a parking lot (which is good to know in case you’re coming by car – although you definitely don’t need one) and a tourist shop with souvenirs. To be honest, we’re not really into souvenirs, so we didn’t spend much time there.
What we really came for was the view from the so-called “Big Chinese Wall” – a part of the canyon that looks like a natural wall, which is how it got its nickname – and from the larger hill opposite the wall. Near the souvenir shop, there was also a map showing where the trails lead, but honestly, wherever you go, the colorful sandy formations are just magical.
At moments, it honestly felt like we were back in Peru, hiking Rainbow Mountain – but with fewer people and way more peace.
We stayed in Skazka Canyon for around three hours, and we could’ve easily stayed longer. It’s really up to you how much time you want to spend wandering around. And if you’re hungry, this place is also perfect for a little break – grab something to eat, find a nice spot, and just enjoy the view with a picnic or whatever makes you happy.
Where to stay around Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon?
If you want to stay right inside Skazka Canyon and you’re carrying your own camping gear, it’s possible to set up a tent directly in the area. We saw a few people doing it and it honestly looked like such a cool and peaceful experience – especially imagining those starry skies at night!
But if you’re not traveling with a tent and still want something authentic and close to nature, we’d recommend this yurt camp: Ak-Tengir Yurt Resort around 10 kilometers from Skazka.
If you’re looking for a cozy and stylish place to stay near both Skazka Canyon and Issyk-Kul Lake, we can definitely recommend the charming Vinland Guest House.
Located just a short drive from Skazka and right by the shores of Issyk-Kul, this guesthouse offers the perfect balance between comfort, nature, and design. Moreover, if you still don’t have any accommodation booked, it’s totally possible to find some unmarked yurt camps along the road to Skazka. For example, we noticed Royal Yurt Camp:
We also saw a few other camps nearby (as you can see in the picture below around half a kilometer away) that aren’t listed online. However, we strongly recommend checking in advance if they’re open and available, especially in low season.
